An Open Letter To Roger Goodell | Commissioner, National Football League

September 30, 2014

To: Roger Goodell | Commissioner, National Football League

Dear Roger:

I am honored that you would take the time to learn about my film, The Trees, which will tackle the important and timely issue of domestic violence. As the NFL Commissioner, I believe that you will have interest in this film because of the themes portrayed, including powerful messages about domestic violence, athletes, and how we judge both as a society.

My film begins after a horrific act of violence, where a tormented mother finds herself seeking refuge from the very man responsible, her estranged husband. As she experiences evil on a realistic level, a series of strange unexplained events start to unfold in the surrounding trees of her home. One goal of the film is to create a visceral film experience that causes the audience to think about how the domestic violence experienced by individuals affects our society as a whole. The audience will be left with the sense that domestic violence is the demon that invades individuals and ultimately tears entire families apart.

Whether or not we have personally experienced domestic violence, we have all seen the shocking images. Real women and men deal with terrifying violence from their partners every day. This includes people of all races and socioeconomic status, which is why this film will transcend race and stereotypes by not shying away from them.

The film will also tackle stereotypes surrounding athletes that are especially prevalent today, through the vehicle of a supporting character named Rome Wallace. Rome Wallace is the main character’s longtime friend and an aspiring athlete with dreams of making it to the NFL. He is the hero that tries to protect his friend’s wife from domestic violence. Rome’s character is intended to make a powerful statement about stereotyping groups based on the actions of a few.

After playing the primary stunt double for the main football player in this year’s biggest sports film, When the Game Stands Tall, London Durham was cast to portray the character of Rome Wallace in The Trees. London made it all the way to training camp, and a three year contract with the Seattle Seahawks before being cut and deciding to pursue an acting career. He has a long history of domestic violence and has been abused personally throughout his childhood. I feel so fortunate to be working with London, because he brings his integrity and experiences to this important, pivotal role.

It might be unexpected for an independent filmmaker to contact the NFL about a film centered on domestic violence, but it makes complete sense to me. I come from a family of huge football fans. As I have been working on this film for some time, I was deeply saddened to see the NFL linked to domestic violence in the most negative way. I would love the chance to bring the NFL back into the conversation around domestic violence in a way that is both positive and inspiring.

I have received a great deal of support on, studios, marquee film festivals and several private investors. It is becoming clear that this film will get made. What I am looking for now are opportunities and partnerships to make this the best film it can be, to get the important messages in this film to a wide audience. I believe that some of our goals are aligned and would love to discuss the film more with you.

You can find more information about The Trees at or on Kickstarter. I would also love to have a conversation with you to tell you some of the exciting things we are working on currently, especially related to media campaigns and marketing initiatives. I can be reached at
